DEPARTMENT OF
BOTANY

The Department of Botany was established in the year 1968. At the time of its inception, the Department offered only Pre-Degree Course. Complementary Botany Course was started in 1979. The Department started to offer B.Sc. Plant Science programme from 2001 onwards. The faculty and students of the Department are actively involved in the field of biological research and constantly try to position the department as the best in both academic and non-academic pursuits. From the first batch onwards the first and second ranks in Kannur University B.Sc. Plant Science examinations are always secured by the students of this Botany Department. The Department proudly claims that its alumni are placed in respectable positions, both nationally and internationally.

The Department is well equipped with modern amenities and laboratories for both Core and Complementary courses. The Department boasts of a Botanical Museum, Herbaria, Herbal garden, Green House, RET garden and Curiosity Corner, maintained to inculcate a love and interest of plants in the students of the college.

Highlights

The college campus has ample green cover. Vegetation is found as small pockets or patches at areas with higher anthropogenic activities, while dense flora is found in undisturbed areas of the campus. Flora of the campus is prepared based on repeated seasonal collections from every nook and corner of the campus with the help of students. NAS College campus is bestowed with the presence of 439 species of vascular plants coming under 337 genera and 113 families. Angiosperms and more specifically seasonal plants dominate with 432 species followed by 4 Pteridophytes and 3 Gymnosperms. Among Angiosperms, 340 are dicotyledons and 92 monocotyledons. Herbaceous plants dominate as 194 species are herbs, followed by 118 tree, 83 shrub and 44 climber species respectively. Campus also offer protection for 205 medicinal plants, 113 ornamental plants, 71 edible plants and 54 RET plants.
