E. ABOUT THE COLLEGE
Nehru Arts and Science College Kanhangad, Kasaragod District., established in 1968 is a government-aided private college affiliated to the Kannur University, imparting quality education to the economically and socially backward region of northern Kerala.

“Education for all and for all round development” is the vision of the Institution. The College remains as the most reputed institution of its kind in its zone by its remarkable performance in academic, research, co-curricular, extracurricular and extension activities. Our students take part in University/State/National/International sports and games competitions and bring laurels. The College has been performing very well in the University Fine Arts Festivals for the past several years. The college could achieve international participation in Sports this year.

The college secured 95 th position in NIRF 2020. In the NIRF-2023, the college is placed in the 151-200 rank band. In 2017, the college was reaccredited with ‘A’ grade with CGPA 3.35 (third cycle) by National Assessment and Accreditation Council. NAAC has assigned our college, the role of a mentor institute for encouraging and bringing the non-accredited institutions in the geographic vicinity into the main stream under UGC-Paramarsh Scheme.

With the introduction of lift and ramps in the remaining academic blocks and canteen, the College has become 100 % disabled friendly.

College offers UG and PG programmes in science, arts and commerce, viz. 10 UG, 5 PG, 1 Integrated PG and 1 Ph.D. programme in Statistics. Out of the 10 UG programmes, 6 are in the science stream, 3 are in arts and 1 is in commerce. PG programmes are offered in Statistics, Physics, History, English and Commerce. The integrated PG programme is in MSc. Computer Science with specialization in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The College authorities are working relentlessly to add more courses. The College is a nodal centre of the Centre for Continuing Education Kerala. In its forward march, the college ensures to impart the core values like contributing to national development. Fostering competencies among students, inculcating a value system in students, promoting the use of technology, quest for excellence etc., are ensured by the College.

College has 52 permanent & 22 Guest faculty members and 30 Non teaching staff Amoung the full time faculty members 31 have obtained their Ph.D. and 10 are actively doing their research. Apart from Ph.D. holders, 15 faculty members possess M.Phil. degree. In addition to the 2 research supervisors, 8 more have been recognized as research supervisors. College has instituted 5 Research Awards for the best PhD thesis in Science, Humanities, commerce, Literature and Mathematical Sciences. The Department of Malayalam and the Sahithyavedi have been awarding best short story writers of the State through Mampoo puraskaram worth Rs. 11,111/-.
RUSA and Department of Science and Technology have funded the college for infrastructure development. A residential orientation camp was conducted for the first year students this year for the purpose of providing close interaction between the staff and the students. The facilities inside the Campus and career opportunities were explained and orientation towards personality development was given. Classes on anti-narcotics were also held.

A Convocation Ceremony was organized to reward the students who have completed the PG programme successfully.

Feedback is being collected from the students and parents to make sure that the stated objectives are achieved effectively. Advanced learners are supported through seminars, workshops and conferences on latest areas in the concerned subjects. Remedial classes are arranged for slow learners.

To promote the quality of education and to inculcate the values, the IQAC of the college has initiated and implemented several Centres and Cells like NASCian Green Initiatives Centre(NAGIC), NASC's E-Learning Centre(NELC), NASCian Disaster Management Group(NDMG), NASC's Human Resource Development Centre(NHRDC), NASC's Innovation and Incubation Centre(NIIC), NASC's Technology Support Centre(NTSC), NASCian Centre for Gender equality and Women Empowerment(NWEC), NASCian Coaching Centre for Competitive Examinations(N-CCCE), NASC’s Guidance And Counselling Centre(NGACC).

The extension activities of the college include activities in the area of charity, blood donation, infrastructure development, construction of houses, environmental cleanliness, anti-drug activities, literacy, health awareness, cancer detection and eradication, gender equality, eradication of superstition, exploration, surveys, national integration, secularism etc. NCC, NSS units and various clubs of the college have contributed profusely to the society through their extension activities. The Sahithyavedi and the Department of Malayalam conducted a “Kavyotsavam” programme on poetry involving renowned poets in the language for improving the literary skills of students in the regional language.

The clubs functioning under various centres of the College are conducting extension activities in the neighbourhood community. They sensitize the students by observing Women's Day, Yoga Day etc. by conducting various programmes involving students. NSS has been a part of construction of “Snehaveedu” a shelter for endosulfan victims. The students are made to experience the situation of fellow human beings by making them do service in the community like the building of Snehaveedu, providing relief material to the needy people in refugee homes etc. Laharivirudha vedi ensures that the students are made aware of the dangers of drug abuse through various programmes. The NSS unit of the College conducted “Bodhyam”- Anti Narcotics Campaign. The College was one among the three best colleges, awarded at the State Level for the conduct of the programme. The NCC
provides programmes which inculcate the feeling of patriotism, in addition to other social service activities. The students are made to experience the situation of fellow human beings by making them do service in the community like the building of Snehaveedu, providing relief material to the needy people in refugee homes etc.

The State Government had given the Kerala State Green Campus Award to our college for our exemplary contributions in the extension activities in the area of environmental protections. In 2022-23, the College has planted more than 150 mango trees belonging to local varieties aiming at a contribution towards Carbon Neutrality. As a part of the Green initiatives and social responsibility, the college signed MoU with Kerala State Electricity Board(KSEB), Government of Kerala, and installed a 100 kv Solar Power Plant over the roof top of the existing buildings of the college under the Soura Project. About 400 units of energy may be generated through this project and 90% of the same will be distributed to the consumers of Kasaragod district by KSEB.

Our NSS unit and the Program Officers have been adjudged the best over the years. Infrastructure facilities in the college are envisioned and equipped for the convenience of the students and the staff.

The college has implemented the Young Innovators programme designed under Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council (K-DISC) of Government of Kerala and our students have been awarded by the Government by recognizing their innovative ideas.

High speed Internet facility with WiFi is introduced in the campus through optical fibre cabling with 50 mbps and 100 mbps speed. 20 class rooms have been upgraded into smart class rooms. Waste management and renewable energy source is introduced for Bio-degradable waste management. Centralized Computer Centre has 60 computer terminals. A new computer lab with 30 computers has been set up this year. Uninterrupted power supplies through generators, UPS and inverters are provided. The computer-student ratio 1 :10 is maintained in the college with the help of more than 120 desktop computers and 15 laptops & notebooks. A well-equipped Online Examination Centre is functioning in the College.

A well-established library building with special reference section houses more than 34000 books, 81 journals, periodicals, dailies etc. E-journals are available through N-LIST, DELNET, DPSACE and National digital library. Browsing in the Library is supported by the software KOHA and online remote public access for faculty and students is available. Computer assistive technology for differently abled persons is introduced in the Library and the Centralised Computer Centre.

To support students from socially and economically weaker sections, a large number of endowments, scholarships and financial aids are instituted at department and college level through agencies like PTA, Alumni, Management, retired teaching and non-teaching staff, staff members etc. The college has set up a fund named Principal’s Distress Relief Fund (PDRF) to support the educational needs of financially backward students by mobilizing fund from all stakeholders. The students are given motivation to appear for competitive examinations.

The Alumni, the Centre for Career Information and Guidance (CCIG) and various other departments give regular or occasional training programmes to build competency among students. The college has a very effective tutorial system in which a tutor is in-charge of a class. Many students have got placement in well-known companies and institutions with the help of CCIG and Placement Cell.
The Grievance Redressal cell functions at five forums - The Students’ Grievance Redressal Cell, The Employees’ Grievance Redressal Cell, the Women’s Cell, the Sports Students’ Complaint Committee, the Internal Complaint Committee and the Anti ragging Cell.

Guided by our vision and striving to achieve the mission, the college takes all its efforts to ensure the quality of higher education in order to strengthen the core-values identified by the NAAC.

Right to Information Act 2005 mandates timely response to citizen requests for government information.The basic object of the Right to Information Act is to empower the citizens,promote transparency and accountability in the working of the Government,contain corruption, and make our democracy work for the people in real sense.It goes without saying that an informed citizen is better equipped to keep necessary vigil on the instruments of governance and make the government more accountable to the governed.The Act is a big step towards making the citizens informed about the activities of the Government.
